As Delhi's air quality plunged into the "severe" category, the city government announced Thursday that classes for students up to Class V would shift to online mode. "Due to rising pollution levels, all primary schools in Delhi will switch to online classes until further notice," Delhi Chief Minister Atishi posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Following the announcement, the Directorate of Education issued an order instructing all government, government-aided, and private schools in Delhi, including those under the MCD, NDMC, and DCB, to suspend in-person classes for children up to Class V and conduct them online.

This decision aligns with new restrictions under Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR, which include a ban on construction and demolition activities and limits on vehicle entry into the city.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has also added 20 more weekday trips to accommodate increased commuter traffic, on top of the 40 additional trips implemented under GRAP-II. In total, 60 extra trips will run on weekdays for as long as GRAP-III restrictions are in place.

On Thursday morning, Delhi's AQI reached 432, marking the highest level of pollution in the country and the worst of the season. Forecasts indicate that conditions may worsen, prompting the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to introduce stricter anti-pollution measures starting Friday.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board, an AQI above 401 is categorized as “severe” and can pose health risks even to those without preexisting conditions, while seriously impacting those with respiratory or other health issues.

Delhi’s AQI touched 429 on Wednesday evening, peaking at 452 late that night before settling at 432 on Thursday morning. Residents are waking up to hazy, low-visibility mornings, with healthcare professionals warning of the risks associated with prolonged exposure to very poor or severe air quality, especially for individuals with existing health conditions.
