The Delhi government’s upcoming riverfront tourism project at Sonia Vihar is set to feature a rooftop dining space, an amphitheatre and a designated area for Yamuna aarti, according to new updates shared by officials.

Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra chaired a review meeting on Thursday at the Delhi Secretariat with representatives from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi Jal Board and Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC).

Plans for the onshore facility include ticketing counters, visitor lounges, retail kiosks, a themed food and play zone, a cultural stage, a Yamuna aarti deck and a musical fountain positioned in the middle of the river. The project intends to transform the riverbank into a lively leisure and cultural destination.

Officials briefed Mishra on various components of the initiative, including the proposed river tourism stretch, infrastructure progress and the development of ferry and cruise services. Pending approvals, environmental assessments, and pre-construction compliance measures were also discussed.

Mishra instructed departments to improve coordination and accelerate work to prevent procedural delays. He reiterated that any activity along the Yamuna must adhere to National Green Tribunal rules and environmental standards.

Calling the project a step toward reshaping Delhi’s relationship with its river, Mishra said, “Sonia Vihar will play a key role in redefining river-based tourism in the Capital. All agencies must work collaboratively and complete milestones on time.”
