The Delhi government will introduce 56 women-only electric bus services across the city as part of a new initiative to make public transport safer and more convenient for women commuters.

Transport Minister Pankaj Singh said the dedicated network has been planned after identifying routes with a high volume of female passengers. The services will operate across 28 major corridors in the capital.

The project includes 30 Ladies Special bus trips on 15 busy city routes catering to office commuters, along with 26 University Ladies Special services on 13 routes connecting residential neighbourhoods with Delhi University's North and South Campuses and several other prominent colleges.

According to the minister, the office-hour services will run in both directions during peak commuting periods. Morning departures are scheduled between 7:52 am and 9:00 am, while return services will operate from 4:32 pm to 6:15 pm. These routes are designed to connect residential areas with commercial hubs, business districts, institutional zones and important Metro interchange stations.

The university-focused buses will operate in line with academic schedules, offering direct connectivity from areas such as Najafgarh, Rohini, Janakpuri, Mundka, Mayur Vihar, Kalkaji, Palla and Dhaula Kuan to Delhi University campuses and other major educational institutions.

To enhance passenger safety, every bus will be equipped with CCTV cameras, panic buttons connected to the Operation Control Centre, and low-floor ramps to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities. The buses will also feature special branding to make them easily identifiable, while bus marshals or female police personnel may be deployed on selected routes wherever necessary.

The services will be integrated with the Pink Smart Card, enabling eligible women passengers to travel free of cost through a cashless system.

Highlighting the initiative, Singh said the move represents another step towards building a public transport system that prioritises women's safety, accessibility and convenience. He also noted that deploying an all-electric fleet supports the government's broader push for environmentally friendly urban mobility while making travel easier for women, particularly students commuting during early morning and evening hours.
