'Does a Dip Remove Poverty?' Kharge's Maha Kumbh Remark Sparks Row
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's criticism of BJP leaders taking holy dips at Maha Kumbh triggers backlash, with BJP labeling it an attack on Hindu faith
27-01-2025Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's remarks on the Maha Kumbh have stirred a political controversy, with the BJP accusing him of disrespecting Sanatan Dharma. The controversy erupted after Kharge criticized BJP leaders for participating in holy dips at the grand spiritual event in Prayagraj, questioning the impact of such rituals on pressing societal issues.
Speaking at a rally in Madhya Pradesh's Mhow, Kharge questioned whether taking a dip in the Ganga could solve problems like poverty, hunger, and lack of education. “Does taking a holy dip eradicate poverty? Does it provide food or education? Children are starving, laborers remain unpaid, and BJP leaders are busy competing over who looks better on TV during their Ganga dips,” he said. Kharge added that he did not intend to hurt anyone’s religious sentiments but emphasized the need to focus on critical issues plaguing the nation.
Kharge’s remarks coincided with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath taking part in the sacred bathing ritual at the Ganga. The BJP quickly retaliated, accusing Kharge and the Congress of harboring anti-Hindu sentiments.
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra condemned the remarks, calling them an attack on Hindu faith. "Kharge’s words insult Sanatan Dharma. Can he make such statements about any other religion? Congress must clarify its stance," said Patra. He further claimed that Kharge’s comments reflect a consistent pattern of anti-Hindu rhetoric from the party.
BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya also weighed in, accusing the Congress of animosity toward Hindus. “Kharge is speaking, but the words come from the Gandhi family. Congress leaders are so irritated by the Maha Kumbh that they openly criticize Hindus. First Hussain Dalvi mocked the event, and now Kharge has followed suit. Congress is becoming the new Muslim League,” Malviya remarked.
The Maha Kumbh, which began on January 13 with Paush Purnima, has drawn over 110 million devotees to Prayagraj within its first two weeks. While the event is deeply rooted in spiritual significance, it has now become the center of political conflict between Congress and the BJP.
