Former U.S. President and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump recently expressed admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, referring to him as a "friend" and the "nicest human being." Speaking on the Flagrant podcast, Trump shared his thoughts on various world leaders and singled out Modi for praise, emphasizing their personal rapport.
"Modi is a friend of mine and truly the nicest human being. Before he became Prime Minister, India was quite unstable. From the outside, he looks like your father, but he's also a total killer in the best sense," Trump remarked.
He fondly recalled the 2019 "Howdy, Modi" event in Houston, Texas, where Modi addressed a massive crowd of Indian-Americans at the NRG Stadium. "That event was something special. Around 80,000 people came together, and it was just crazy. We were walking around, and the energy was amazing. Today, I might not be able to do something like that," Trump said.
Trump also spoke about the strong relationship he shares with Modi, recalling a particular conversation concerning India-Pakistan tensions. Without naming Pakistan directly, Trump said he offered assistance during the situation, but Modi firmly declined. "I said, 'Let me help; I’m good at this,' and he responded, 'I’ll handle it. We’ve been defeating them for hundreds of years.' I thought, wow, that was something," Trump recalled.
The bond between Trump and Modi is well-documented, with both leaders frequently exchanging compliments. Modi has called Trump a "true friend," and Trump has often praised Modi's leadership and charisma. During his presidency, Trump visited India for the "Namaste Trump" event in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where over 100,000 people gathered, making it the largest rally for a U.S. President outside the country.
Most recently, Trump referred to Modi as a "fantastic person" and expressed his intention to meet him during the Quad Summit, although the meeting did not occur. Their mutual respect continues to be a defining aspect of their relationship.
