18-09-2024Former U.S. President and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced that he will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week during Modi's visit to the United States. Trump shared the news during a campaign event in Michigan, where he discussed trade relations between the U.S. and India. However, he did not provide specifics on the location or agenda for the meeting, according to a Reuters report.
Prime Minister Modi is set to visit the U.S. for three days starting on September 21, where he will attend the annual Quad Summit. The event, hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden, will take place in Delaware and will also include Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
In addition to his participation in the Quad Leaders Summit, Modi will address the 'Summit of the Future' at the United Nations General Assembly and meet with members of the Indian community in New York on September 22, according to India's Ministry of External Affairs.
The last in-person meeting between Trump and Modi occurred in February 2020, when Trump visited India, a moment PM Modi described as a significant step in strengthening ties between the two nations. The two leaders have also previously met during bilateral talks at the G-20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, in 2019 and at the ASEAN Summit in Manila in 2017.
