Drone Explodes Near Netanyahu's Home Amid Rising Tensions with Lebanon
A drone launched from Lebanon exploded near Israeli PM Netanyahu’s residence, days after the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar
19-10-2024A drone launched from Lebanon exploded near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's private residence in Caesarea, located in southern Haifa, on Saturday, according to a Reuters report. Netanyahu and his wife were not at home during the attack, as confirmed by a spokesperson. The incident follows just two days after Israel carried out a strike that killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza.
Two other drones, also launched from Lebanon, were intercepted and destroyed by Israeli air defences, causing alarms to go off in the Tel Aviv area. However, a third drone managed to hit a building in Caesarea, leading to a loud explosion.
Saudi news outlet Al-Hadath reported minor damage to the building, though no casualties were recorded. The drone reportedly travelled approximately 70 kilometers from Lebanon before striking.
This attack comes in the wake of Israel's operation that eliminated Sinwar, the mastermind behind Hamas’s October 7, 2023, assault on Israel. Israeli forces had been hunting Sinwar for a year before he was killed. A video released by Israel showed his final moments, in which Sinwar, gravely injured, was seen attempting to fend off an Israeli drone with a stick.
Despite Sinwar's death, Hamas has vowed to continue its fight, even as international calls for a ceasefire grow. Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas's deputy leader, asserted that the group would not be weakened by Sinwar's killing, while Netanyahu hailed the event as a crucial step toward ending Hamas's "evil rule."
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, expressed support for Hamas, stating that Sinwar’s death would not halt the "Axis of Resistance"—referring to Iran-backed militias in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Gaza. Khamenei declared that while Sinwar’s loss was a blow to the Resistance, Hamas would remain resilient.
This latest drone attack near Netanyahu’s home has sparked fears of a broader escalation, with concerns that the situation could devolve into a more extensive conflict involving Israel and Iran-backed groups across the Middle East.
