Dubai Princess Shaikha Mahra Mohammed Rashed Al Maktoum announced her divorce from her husband, Sheikh Mana bin Mohammed bin Rashid bin Mana Al Maktoum, on Instagram just two months after the birth of their first child.
In a post dated July 16, Princess Shaikha Mahra accused her husband of infidelity and declared their separation using the traditional Islamic practice of instant divorce known as "talaq-e-biddat." The post read: “Dear Husband, as you are occupied with other companions, I hereby declare our divorce. I divorce you, I divorce you, and I divorce you. Take care. Your ex-wife.”
"Talaq-e-biddat" allows a husband to dissolve the marriage immediately by pronouncing "talaq" three times in one sitting. While this practice has traditionally been exclusive to men, women in some jurisdictions can seek divorce through "khula," where they request a divorce from their husband or a court. Some women may also include a clause in their marriage contract granting them the right to pronounce talaq.
The princess's Instagram announcement quickly drew attention, with concerned messages from her well-wishers flooding the comments section. Observers also noted that all photos of her husband had been removed from her account, and the couple had unfollowed each other on the platform.
Princess Shaikha Mahra married Sheikh Mana, an industrialist, in May 2023, and they welcomed their daughter a year later. In June, Shaikha Mahra posted a cryptic message on Instagram, sharing a picture of herself cradling her baby with the caption, “Just the two of us.”
Shaikha Mahra is the daughter of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the current ruler of Dubai and the vice president and prime minister of the UAE.
