ED Challenges Bail of Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren in Supreme Court
The Enforcement Directorate moves to contest the Jharkhand High Court's decision granting bail to Chief Minister Hemant Soren in a high-profile money laundering case
08-07-2024The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the bail granted to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Soren was released from Birsa Munda jail in Ranchi on June 28 after the Jharkhand High Court ruled that there was insufficient evidence against him in a money laundering case related to a land scam.
The ED contends that the High Court's decision was unlawful, asserting that there is a prima facie case against the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader.
Soren had been arrested on January 31 following his resignation as Chief Minister, amid allegations made in connection with the same case.
His release led to the resignation of former Chief Minister and JMM leader Champai Soren, after which Hemant Soren regained the Chief Minister's position by winning a confidence vote in the Assembly.
