The Election Commission of India (ECI) has sent a formal notice to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his remarks directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a press interaction in poll-bound Tamil Nadu.
In its communication, the Commission expressed concern over what it described as inappropriate and demeaning language used against a constitutional office-holder. The notice stated that such expressions fall short of the standards expected in public discourse and may erode respect for democratic institutions.
The controversy erupted after Kharge, while criticising the AIADMK for aligning with the BJP for the April 23 Assembly elections, allegedly referred to the Prime Minister in highly objectionable terms and questioned his commitment to equality and justice. His comments quickly drew strong reactions from BJP leaders across the country.
As criticism mounted, Kharge clarified that he did not intend to label the Prime Minister literally but meant that the opposition feels “intimidated” by the alleged use of central agencies. He accused institutions such as the Income Tax Department and the Enforcement Directorate of acting in favour of the ruling party, asserting that his remarks were aimed at highlighting what he called political pressure tactics.
The BJP subsequently approached the Election Commission, alleging that Kharge’s statement breached the Model Code of Conduct in force for the Tamil Nadu elections. According to the notice, the complaint was submitted by BJP office-bearers, who also cited possible violations under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
Senior BJP leaders, including Union Minister Piyush Goyal and former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai, condemned the Congress leader’s comments and demanded a public apology. They argued that the remarks disrespected both the Prime Minister and the electorate.
The Election Commission has asked Kharge to respond to the allegations, and further action will depend on his reply.
