Tech billionaire Elon Musk was reportedly part of a recent phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to a report by The New York Times, which cited American officials familiar with the matter.

The call, held on Tuesday, focused on the escalating conflict involving Iran and marked the first direct exchange between Trump and Modi since US and Israeli military operations against Tehran began in late February. Officials quoted in the report described Musk’s presence on a high-level wartime call between two heads of government as highly unusual for a private citizen.

Two US officials confirmed Musk’s participation, though it remains unclear what role he played in the discussion or whether he spoke during the conversation. The development is being interpreted by some observers as a sign that relations between Trump and Musk may have improved after a reported rift last year following Musk’s exit from a government-linked role aimed at reducing the federal workforce.

The White House characterised the exchange between Trump and Modi as constructive. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the two leaders share a strong working relationship and described the discussion as productive.

During the call, Prime Minister Modi is understood to have emphasised the strategic importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure, highlighting its significance for global energy flows, economic stability and regional peace.

The conversation comes at a time of heightened tensions in West Asia, with diplomatic and military developments continuing to shape the geopolitical landscape.
