Elon Musk's X Introduces Policy Allowing Adult Content
X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, now officially permits users to post consensual adult content under updated guidelines
04-06-2024Elon Musk's social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has made a significant policy change, now formally allowing users to post adult and graphic content.
In its latest update, X has revised its guidelines to permit users to create, share, and view content related to sexual themes, provided it is consensually produced and distributed. The platform emphasizes that sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression.
According to a post on the X Help Center, the platform aims to balance this freedom by restricting exposure to adult content for minors and users who prefer not to see it. The guidelines prohibit content promoting exploitation, non-consensual acts, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviors. Additionally, adult content is not allowed in highly visible places such as profile photos or banners.
Definition of Adult Content: X defines adult content as any consensually produced material depicting adult nudity or sexual behavior intended to cause sexual arousal. This includes AI-generated, photographic, and animated content such as cartoons, hentai, or anime.
Content Warning Measures: To enhance safety, X requires users interested in posting adult content to adjust their media settings. All such images and videos will appear behind a content warning that must be acknowledged before viewing. Moreover, users under 18 or those without a listed birthdate on their profile will not be able to view marked content.
Potential Issues: Previously, adult content was neither explicitly banned nor mentioned in X's official rules. The new guidelines may signal a shift in the platform's focus, raising concerns about potential misuse. According to a Reuters report, approximately 13% of posts on X in 2022 contained adult content. With the platform now officially permitting such content, there is a possibility that issues may escalate, attracting closer scrutiny from regulators.
