Ex-CIA Chief Slams Trump as Iran War Deepens Crisis

The prolonged conflict with Iran is increasingly placing Donald Trump under intense scrutiny, with critics arguing that the situation has become more complex and difficult to manage with each passing week. Former US defence secretary Leon Panetta described the president’s position as deeply constrained, suggesting the crisis is partly a result of strategic miscalculations.

Panetta pointed out that the risks associated with Iran’s ability to disrupt global energy supplies—particularly through the Strait of Hormuz—have long been understood by US policymakers. He argued that these dangers were not adequately factored into the current approach, leaving the administration exposed to predictable consequences.

According to him, the US appeared unprepared for the scale and nature of Iran’s response. Instead of weakening Tehran’s leadership, the conflict may have strengthened it, with a more hardline stance emerging at the top. This shift, he noted, has complicated efforts to achieve a decisive outcome.

Domestically, the political pressure is also intensifying. Rising fuel costs and uncertainty surrounding the duration of the conflict are influencing public sentiment. Recent surveys indicate growing disapproval among Americans regarding the military campaign.

Panetta emphasised that the president now faces a difficult dilemma—either scaling back operations and risking the perception of failure, or escalating further and potentially worsening the crisis. He also criticised the lack of coordination with allies, warning that sidelining partners could limit diplomatic and strategic options.

As tensions continue to escalate, concerns remain high over the broader economic and geopolitical impact, particularly if key energy routes remain disrupted or the conflict spreads further across the region.
