In a major push into India’s expanding motorsport and gaming market, Formula 1 has joined hands with Mumbai Falcons Racing Limited (MFRL) to roll out the F1 Sim Racing India Open 2026 — the country’s first officially endorsed virtual F1 competition.
The championship represents a structured national platform designed specifically for Indian sim racers, marking the first time Formula 1 has introduced an India-focused competitive programme of this scale. The move signals the sport’s intent to strengthen its footprint in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital and sporting markets.
How the Championship Will Work
The tournament will be hosted on the official F1 25 video game, replicating authentic race conditions from the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. Players will compete on real-world circuits using official team cars and formats.
Participants can enter via PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox, with registrations opening April 30 through the dedicated MFRL mobile application.
The competition format will unfold in phases:
- Nationwide online qualification rounds
- City-level simulator events
- A grand national finale in Mumbai scheduled for November
Bridging Virtual Racing and Real Motorsport
The initiative arrives at a time when interest in Formula 1 is surging across India, alongside conversations around the sport’s possible return to the country. With e-sports now formally recognised under India’s Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, the championship aims to create a formal bridge between digital racing and professional motorsport careers.
Former Formula 1 driver Narain Karthikeyan described the timing as ideal, noting that a digitally savvy generation of Indian fans already engages deeply with F1 gaming platforms. He emphasised that the championship could serve as a credible stepping stone for young talent aspiring to enter competitive motorsport.
Mumbai Falcons’ Expanding Global Presence
MFRL Managing Director Ameet Gadhoke said the partnership aligns with the team’s long-term goal of building a world-class racing ecosystem rooted in India. According to him, the project is part of a broader strategy to establish a structured development pathway for emerging drivers.
Founded in 2019, Mumbai Falcons has gained recognition in international junior racing categories and became the first Indian team to secure an FIA-accredited single-seater championship title. The outfit has played a role in nurturing talents such as Jehan Daruvala, Kush Maini and Oliver Bearman.
A New Era for Indian Sim Racers
With the F1 Sim Racing India Open 2026, Formula 1 and Mumbai Falcons are positioning India’s gaming community at the centre of a competitive, merit-based racing ecosystem. Beyond entertainment, the tournament is being seen as a foundation for long-term talent identification and professional progression.
