Former United States President Donald Trump took center stage at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. During his acceptance of the Republican Party’s presidential nomination, he declared, “Tonight, with faith and devotion, I proudly accept your nomination for President of the United States.”
Reflecting on a recent assassination attempt, Trump credited his survival to divine intervention, stating, "I had God on my side."
This was Trump’s first speech since the incident, where 20-year-old Thomas Mathew Crooks shot at him during a rally last weekend, wounding his ear.
"I am not supposed to be here tonight — not supposed to be here," Trump remarked, to which the crowd responded enthusiastically, "Yes, you are."
As Trump approached the podium to deliver his acceptance speech, Lee Greenwood’s live rendition of “God Bless the USA” filled the air, heightening the emotional intensity.
The 78-year-old Republican leader noted that his supporters had raised 6.3 million dollars for the victims of the shooting incident in Pennsylvania. He also observed a moment of silence for Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old firefighter and father of two, who lost his life in the shooting at the Pennsylvania rally.
Adopting an unusually somber and almost whispering tone, Trump cautioned against demonizing political opponents. He warned against vilifying rivals and criminalizing dissent, portraying himself as a victim of politically motivated charges. “If Democrats want to unify our country, they should drop these partisan witch hunts,” he stated.
“In that spirit of unity, the Democratic Party should immediately stop weaponizing the justice system and labeling their political opponent as an enemy of democracy. Especially since that is not true. In fact, I am the one saving democracy for the people of our country,” he added.
