Haryana Suspends Mobile Internet in Nuh Ahead of Controversial Yatra
Haryana has suspended mobile internet and bulk SMS services in Nuh for 24 hours to prevent violence during the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra
21-07-2024The Haryana government has ordered the suspension of mobile internet and bulk SMS services in Nuh district for 24 hours starting from 6 pm on Sunday, in anticipation of the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra. This measure comes as a precaution after last year's event was marred by violence.
According to an order issued by Haryana Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Anurag Rastogi, the suspension aims to prevent potential tension, annoyance, agitation, damage to public and private property, and disturbance of public peace in the district.
The decision to suspend services was made "to stop the spread of misinformation and rumours" via social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter.
In preparation for the Yatra, Nuh Police have implemented tight security arrangements to ensure the event proceeds smoothly.
Last year, on July 31, violence erupted when a mob in Nuh attempted to halt a Vishva Hindu Parishad procession, resulting in the deaths of two home guards and injuries to at least 15 others, including several policemen. That same night, a mosque in Gurugram was attacked, leading to the death of its naib imam. The interfaith clashes ultimately left at least five people dead and many more injured.
