Hemant Soren Set to Reclaim Jharkhand Chief Minister Post After Jail Release
Hemant Soren is set to reclaim the Chief Minister's office in Jharkhand following his release from prison, marking a leadership change within the INDIA alliance
03-07-2024Hemant Soren, recently released on bail after a five-month stint in Birsa Munda Central Jail on charges related to a money laundering case, is poised to return as Jharkhand's Chief Minister. The decision for a leadership change within the INDIA alliance was reportedly reached unanimously, prompting Champai Soren to tender his resignation by late evening.
This development marks Hemant Soren's third tenure as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, a state carved out of Bihar in 2000. The INDIA bloc's decision was finalized during a meeting at the Chief Minister's residence in Ranchi, attended by key leaders including Congress's Jharkhand in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir and state president Rajesh Thakur, as well as Hemant Soren's family members.
Discussions are also underway regarding Champai Soren potentially taking on new responsibilities as the chairman of the UPA coordination committee and the working president of JMM. Meanwhile, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has signaled a shift in the state's political landscape, declaring that the "Champai Soren era" has come to an end in Jharkhand.
Champai Soren, a stalwart JMM leader and longtime associate of party founder Shibu Soren, has been a prominent figure within the party ranks for decades.
