Today, both Hezbollah and Israel have launched significant military operations against each other, marking a sharp escalation in the ongoing conflict. Hezbollah, a Lebanon-based militant group backed by Iran, claimed responsibility for launching over 320 Katyusha rockets aimed at strategic Israeli military sites.

In response, the Israeli military initiated preemptive strikes on targets within Lebanon. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced early Sunday that it had identified Hezbollah preparing for large-scale attacks on Israeli territory. Israeli Air Force fighter jets were deployed to neutralize the threats, with strikes focused on Hezbollah positions deemed to pose an imminent danger to Israeli civilians.

This latest surge in hostilities follows weeks of rising tensions, particularly after Hezbollah vowed retaliation for the assassination of its military commander, Fuad Shukr, last month. Hezbollah has described the killing of Shukr as a provocation and an act of war. As part of their retaliation, the group stated that they initiated air attacks using drones deep into Israel and launched a significant number of rockets targeting Israeli military sites, barracks, and Iron Dome missile defense platforms. Hezbollah has warned that these military operations are expected to continue for some time.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded by convening a security cabinet meeting at 0400 GMT. In a statement from Netanyahu's office, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant declared a state of emergency across Israel for the next 48 hours. This special status allows the IDF Home Front Command to impose restrictions on the civilian population as needed.

"The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) identified Hezbollah preparing to fire missiles and rockets toward Israeli territory," the Israeli military said in a statement. "In response, the IDF is striking terror targets in Lebanon. Israeli Air Force (IAF) fighter jets are currently targeting Hezbollah positions that pose an imminent threat to Israeli citizens."

As a precaution, Ben Gurion International Airport in Israel announced delays and diversions of flights. Emergency services have also raised their readiness levels, bracing for potential large-scale attacks from Hezbollah.

The United States expressed its support for Israel amidst the escalating conflict. US National Security Council Spokesperson Sean Savett stated, "At President Joe Biden's direction, senior US officials have been in continuous communication with their Israeli counterparts. We will continue supporting Israel's right to defend itself and work towards maintaining regional stability."

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has intensified in recent weeks, with near-daily exchanges of fire across the Israel-Lebanon border since the outbreak of war in Gaza. The latest escalation has heightened concerns about the possibility of a broader conflict involving Lebanon.

This flare-up in violence is part of a larger pattern of hostility that began after Hamas's attack on southern Israel on October 7 of last year. That attack claimed nearly 1,200 lives, the majority of whom were civilians. Israel's subsequent military campaign in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 40,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials.
