Hyderabad, once the shared capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, officially became the exclusive capital of Telangana starting from Sunday, in accordance with the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.

From June 2 onwards, Hyderabad will solely serve as the capital city of Telangana, marking the completion of the 10-year period during which it was shared by both states following the bifurcation of undivided Andhra Pradesh in 2014.

The AP Reorganisation Act stipulated that Hyderabad would function as the common capital for a maximum of ten years post-bifurcation. Subsequently, after this period, Hyderabad would become the permanent capital of Telangana, while Andhra Pradesh would establish a new capital.

The formation of Telangana in 2014 marked the realization of a long-standing demand, culminating in the passage of the AP Reorganisation bill in Parliament earlier that year.

Ahead of the transition, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy instructed officials to reclaim government properties, such as the Lake View government guest house in Hyderabad, which were allocated to Andhra Pradesh for the interim period.

Despite a decade passing since the split, unresolved issues, particularly regarding the division of assets, continue to linger between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Efforts to address these issues were hindered recently when the Telangana government's attempt to discuss bifurcation-related matters during a cabinet meeting was reportedly thwarted by the Election Commission, citing constraints imposed by the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha polls.
