In a disturbing case from the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Raipur, authorities have filed an FIR against a student accused of generating explicit AI-altered images of female classmates. The move follows an internal inquiry that confirmed serious misuse of artificial intelligence tools.

The accused, identified as Syed Rahim Adnan Ali, allegedly used AI-based applications to morph and create indecent visuals of 36 female students, according to investigators. The FIR was registered at Rakhi Police Station under multiple provisions of the Information Technology Act and related laws.

Complaint Sparked Internal Probe

The matter came to light on October 6, when several students alerted faculty members that their images had been tampered with. In response, the institute swiftly formed a fact-finding committee, led by a senior female faculty member.

During the probe, the committee seized the student’s laptop, smartphone, and pen drive, which were found to contain objectionable AI-generated material.

Immediate Disciplinary Action

The accused, who lived in the campus hostel and was known personally to many of the victims, was expelled from IIIT Raipur the same day and suspended from hostel accommodation. His parents were informed, and he was sent back to his hometown in Bilaspur district.

Registrar Srinivas, who also serves as the institute spokesperson, confirmed:

“The student was expelled on the same day. We lodged a formal police complaint the next evening and secured all digital evidence to hand over to authorities.”

Police Begin Investigation

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Vivek Shukla said law enforcement teams will soon visit the institute to take official custody of the seized devices. A separate police unit is being dispatched to Bilaspur to bring the accused in for questioning.

“The FIR includes provisions from the IT Act. We are working closely with the college to ensure a thorough investigation,” the ASP added.

Growing Alarm Over AI Misuse

The incident has sent shockwaves across the student community, prompting discussions about the ethical dangers of artificial intelligence when misused for personal harm. Experts and women’s rights advocates have urged educational institutions to adopt stricter digital monitoring and awareness measures.

With nationwide attention on the case, the IIIT Raipur incident underscores the urgent need for clear laws and accountability frameworks to address the dark side of AI tools in the digital era.
