Amid escalating trade tensions with the United States, the Chinese Embassy in India has called on New Delhi and Beijing to join forces in addressing the economic fallout of Washington's protectionist trade policies.

In a post on X, Chinese Embassy spokesperson Yu Jing highlighted the mutual benefits and interdependence of the China-India economic relationship. “As the world’s two largest developing nations, India and China should work together to weather the difficulties caused by the U.S.'s misuse of tariffs,” Yu said.

In a detailed statement, she explained that China's economic resilience stems from its broad-based industrial foundation and sustained investments in research and development. “China’s growth is powered by a complete industrial system, ongoing technological upgrades, and a strong innovation drive,” she noted.

Yu reaffirmed China’s commitment to multilateralism and open global trade. “China is a staunch advocate of globalisation and the multilateral trading system, contributing close to 30% of the world’s economic growth on average each year. We will continue working with global partners to protect the international trade framework, particularly with the WTO at its center,” she said.

She stressed that unilateral trade practices, such as the U.S.'s tariff strategy, undermine the development rights of countries in the Global South. “Trade wars benefit no one. All nations must uphold true multilateralism and resist protectionism in all forms,” Yu asserted.

Trump’s Tariff Hike Adds Fuel to US-China Trade Fire

This diplomatic push from China follows a dramatic escalation in trade friction between Washington and Beijing. U.S. President Donald Trump recently introduced sweeping new duties, including a staggering 104% tariff on all Chinese imports, set to take effect from midnight on April 8. The move came after Trump gave Beijing a 24-hour ultimatum to reverse its own 34% retaliatory tariff on U.S. products.

In a firm response, Beijing vowed to retaliate. The Chinese Commerce Ministry labeled the U.S. move as “baseless and an example of unilateral coercion.” Officials stated that any countermeasures taken by China would be lawful and necessary to protect its economic security and sovereignty.

China has already introduced a range of retaliatory tariffs and warned of additional steps to counter U.S. pressure. The ministry emphasized that these actions are aimed at preserving fair trade norms and defending China’s development rights on the global stage.
