Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Venezuela's Acting President Delcy Rodríguez in New Delhi on Thursday, with both leaders reviewing bilateral relations and discussing ways to expand cooperation in several strategic areas, including energy, technology, agriculture, healthcare and critical minerals.
The meeting took place during Rodríguez's official visit to India, which is aimed at strengthening economic and diplomatic engagement between the two countries. She is leading a high-level delegation and is scheduled to hold a series of interactions with Indian officials during her stay.
Energy security figured prominently in the discussions as India continues efforts to diversify its sources of crude oil imports. Venezuela, home to some of the world's largest oil reserves, is increasingly being viewed as a potential long-term energy partner for India.
Both sides explored opportunities to increase collaboration in the energy sector, while also discussing possibilities for greater investment and trade cooperation. Officials believe closer engagement could support India's growing energy requirements while creating new economic opportunities for Venezuela.
Apart from oil and energy, the leaders exchanged views on strengthening cooperation in mining, technology, agriculture and healthcare. Discussions also focused on expanding people-to-people connections and encouraging greater interaction between businesses and institutions from both countries.
Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi described Venezuela as an important partner for India in the Latin American region. He emphasised that cooperation between the two nations would continue to grow in areas that contribute to economic development and mutual prosperity.
Rodríguez's visit is also being seen as an opportunity to build on the historical relationship between India and Venezuela at a time when both countries are looking to broaden international partnerships and strengthen cooperation among developing nations.
Earlier during her visit, the Venezuelan leader paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, underscoring the importance of the longstanding ties between the two countries.
The talks are expected to pave the way for deeper collaboration in multiple sectors and provide fresh momentum to India-Venezuela relations in the years ahead.
