In Japan, the traditional Joya no Kane ceremony—ringing temple bells 108 times—marked the occasion, while bustling markets saw shoppers preparing for the new year. Meanwhile, festivities in South Korea were scaled back as the nation mourned the victims of a tragic air accident.
Rome’s New Year celebrations coincided with the launch of Pope Francis’ Holy Year, expected to draw millions of pilgrims to the city. In Paris, the Champs-Elysees hosted its annual fireworks and countdown, and London’s River Thames was illuminated by a stunning display, followed by a grand New Year’s parade.
