External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed India's deep concern over the escalating conflict in the Middle East, warning that rising tensions between Israel and Iran could lead to a full-scale war. During a discussion with a think tank in Washington, he emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in addressing the situation.
"Don't underestimate the significance of communication during challenging times. If there are messages to be conveyed, I believe that contributes positively, and we engage in those discussions," Jaishankar stated. His remarks came just hours before Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel.
Jaishankar highlighted the potential for the conflict to expand beyond Lebanon, mentioning threats from groups like the Houthis and the implications for the Red Sea region. He underscored the necessity for any response from nations involved to comply with international humanitarian law and to avoid civilian casualties.
"We view October 7 as a terrorist attack. While we understand Israel's need to respond, we believe that any reaction must consider international humanitarian law and its impact on civilian populations. An international humanitarian effort is crucial," he added.
On Tuesday, Iran fired at least 180 missiles into Israel in retaliation for the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and the ongoing Israeli military operations in the area. This development raises the stakes, pushing the Middle East closer to a potential regional war, with both Israel and the US pledging to respond to Tehran's actions.
