The Government of India has announced a one-day national mourning following the passing of Qatar's former Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who died on Sunday at the age of 74. The tribute recognises the influential leader's role in transforming Qatar into a global economic and diplomatic force.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the national mourning will be observed on July 13. During the day, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast at all government buildings where it is regularly displayed, and official entertainment programmes will remain suspended as a mark of respect.
The Qatari government confirmed Sheikh Hamad's death but did not specify the cause. He is widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, having overseen sweeping economic reforms, rapid infrastructure development and the expansion of the country's global influence during his tenure.
India is also expected to send a high-level delegation to Qatar to convey its condolences. Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju is likely to represent the Indian government during the official mourning ceremonies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the late leader, describing him as a visionary statesman who played a pivotal role in Qatar's remarkable development. In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister recalled meeting Sheikh Hamad during his visit to Qatar in February 2024 and remembered him as a valued friend of India.
Modi also extended his condolences to Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the royal family and the people of Qatar, expressing sympathy over the loss.
Sheikh Hamad came to power in 1995 and led Qatar through a period of unprecedented transformation. Under his leadership, the country expanded its liquefied natural gas industry, emerging as one of the world's leading LNG exporters and significantly strengthening its economy.
His administration also invested heavily in infrastructure and urban development, helping reshape Doha into a modern global city while enhancing Qatar's international profile through diplomacy and strategic investments.
In 2013, Sheikh Hamad voluntarily transferred power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, saying the time had come for a new generation to lead the country. His decision was widely viewed as an uncommon and orderly transition of leadership in the region.
India's decision to observe national mourning reflects the importance of its longstanding relationship with Qatar and acknowledges Sheikh Hamad's enduring contribution to strengthening ties between the two countries.
