India Objects to China’s New Counties in Ladakh Region, Lodges Diplomatic Protest
India has strongly opposed China’s establishment of two new counties, partially covering Ladakh, and has formally protested through diplomatic channels
22-03-2025The Indian government has expressed strong opposition to China’s recent decision to establish two new counties, parts of which extend into Ladakh. A formal protest has been lodged through diplomatic channels, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Friday.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, responding to a question in the Lok Sabha, reiterated that India does not recognize China’s "illegal occupation" of its territory in the region.
“The Government of India has never accepted China’s unlawful control over Indian land. The creation of new administrative divisions does not change India’s firm position on sovereignty over the area, nor does it validate China’s illegitimate and forceful occupation,” Singh stated.
The MEA clarified that India is fully aware of China’s announcement regarding the establishment of the new counties within the Hotan prefecture. The move has been strongly opposed, and India has communicated its concerns through diplomatic means.
The minister was also asked about the strategic and diplomatic steps being taken to counter China’s actions. In response, he emphasized that the Indian government closely monitors all developments affecting national security and takes necessary measures to safeguard the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Additionally, the minister highlighted that special efforts are being made to enhance infrastructure in border regions. These improvements are aimed at fostering economic growth in these areas while also strengthening India’s security preparedness.
The government’s response underscores India's unwavering stance on border issues and its commitment to protecting national interests amid ongoing tensions with China.
