Security agencies in India are preparing for both short-term and potentially extended arrangements for former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, amid ongoing unrest and violent protests in her home country, sources told India Today TV. Officials are considering the possibility of hosting Hasina for a longer period, given her challenging international situation.
India is working on securing asylum for the 77-year-old Awami League leader in a European country. However, complications have arisen in her travel plans, and she is expected to remain in India for the immediate future.
Preparations are underway for a potential meeting between Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with security agencies coordinating details for such an encounter. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is closely monitoring the situation and providing regular updates to PM Modi regarding Hasina's stay and her possible asylum.
Hasina, who arrived at Hindon Airbase on August 5 aboard a C-130J military transport aircraft, is currently staying at a nearby facility but will be moved to a more secure location in the near future. Indian authorities are extending protocols typically reserved for high-level state visitors to ensure her safety.
Special security drills have been conducted to manage her stay, including arrangements for transportation between Hindon Airbase and key locations in Delhi. The National Security Guard (NSG) commandos are handling internal security, while the Air Force’s Garud commandos are responsible for external security at the airbase.
There is speculation that London may be Hasina’s final destination, supported by the presence of her niece, Tulip Siddiq, a UK MP and junior Treasury minister who resides in north London. However, asylum procedures generally require claimants to seek protection in the first safe country they reach, which could extend Hasina’s stay in India.
The death toll from the anti-government protests in Bangladesh has risen to 440, with the violence intensifying following Hasina’s departure. The Bangladeshi Army is working to stabilize the situation amid widespread unrest.
