India Raises Alarm Over Safety of Peacekeepers Amid Israeli Strikes in Lebanon
India has expressed concern about the safety of its peacekeepers stationed in southern Lebanon after Israeli forces targeted Hezbollah positions near UN bases
11-10-2024India has voiced concerns about the safety of United Nations peacekeepers stationed in southern Lebanon, following reports that Israeli forces targeted Hezbollah positions in the region. Among the peacekeepers, 600 Indian soldiers are currently part of the UN peacekeeping mission along the volatile 120-km Blue Line between Israel and Lebanon.
In a statement released on Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs expressed its apprehension over the deteriorating security situation, saying, "We are concerned about the escalating tensions along the Blue Line. We are closely monitoring the developments. The inviolability of UN premises must be respected by all, and measures should be taken to ensure the safety of UN peacekeepers and the sanctity of their mission."
This statement follows reports from the United Nations that Israeli forces had repeatedly struck UN positions, including the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in Naqoura. According to the UN, two peacekeepers were injured when an Israeli tank fired on an observation tower at the UNIFIL base, causing them to fall. While their injuries were not severe, they remain in hospital for treatment.
Tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border have escalated in recent days, particularly following the assassination of former Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah. Israeli forces are reportedly using land-based artillery in their operations, increasing the risk for UN troops in the area.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have accused Hezbollah of operating near UNIFIL posts and said they maintain routine communication with UNIFIL. In a statement, the IDF added, "The IDF is conducting operations in southern Lebanon and has instructed UN forces in the area to stay in protected spaces before firing in the area."
India's concern reflects the potential dangers faced by its troops deployed as part of UNIFIL, whose mission is to monitor ceasefires and maintain peace in the region.
