India says petrol, diesel supplies stable amid panic buying concerns
The government has reassured citizens that fuel stocks remain sufficient nationwide and urged people not to hoard petrol or diesel despite global oil market volatility
14-03-2026The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has assured the public that petrol and diesel supplies remain adequate across India, even as concerns about global energy disruptions have prompted panic buying in some areas.
In an advisory shared on social media, the ministry said fuel is readily available at retail outlets nationwide and urged citizens to avoid unnecessary stockpiling.
Officials also warned people against storing petrol or diesel in loose or unsuitable containers, noting that such practices can create serious safety hazards.
The clarification came after reports of panic purchasing surfaced in parts of the country following escalating tensions in West Asia and rising global crude oil prices, which recently crossed $117 per barrel.
Videos circulating online from Villupuram in Tamil Nadu showed people attempting to fill fuel in plastic cans and other unsafe containers. Authorities reportedly halted such practices there due to safety concerns.
Fuel retailers have now been instructed to strictly adhere to safety rules while dispensing petrol and diesel, and officials warned that violations could lead to strict action.
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also emphasised that the country is not facing any shortage of fuel and that there are no plans for rationing.
He said India has sufficient strategic reserves and has diversified its crude procurement, including increased imports from Russia, to ensure stable supplies.
Authorities urged citizens to continue purchasing fuel normally and avoid hoarding, stressing that distribution networks and retail outlets remain fully stocked.
