India Urges Canada to Ensure Security at Worship Sites Amid Violence at Brampton Temple
India calls on Canada to safeguard places of worship after recent violent clashes at Brampton’s Hindu Sabha Temple
04-11-2024India condemned the recent violence by extremist and separatist groups at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, Ontario, and called on the Canadian government to protect all religious sites. Addressing the incident, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randir Jaiswal stated, “We urge the Canadian government to secure places of worship from such attacks and hold the perpetrators accountable.”
The violence occurred on Sunday when protesters waving Khalistani flags clashed with attendees at the temple, leading India’s High Commission in Ottawa to issue a statement denouncing the act as an attack by “anti-India” groups. Jaiswal also highlighted India’s concern for the safety of its citizens in Canada, emphasizing that consular staff would continue their duties despite threats.
On Sunday, Peel Regional Police responded to a demonstration at the temple, and unverified videos surfaced showing protesters with pro-Khalistan banners and physical scuffles on the temple grounds. While no arrests were made, the incident escalated already tense diplomatic relations between India and Canada, particularly after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations last year linking Indian agents to the killing of Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a claim New Delhi firmly denies.
India has consistently raised concerns with Canada over pro-Khalistan activities, urging action against what it sees as unchecked separatist agendas on Canadian soil.
