India Will Not Allow Others to Veto Its Choices: S. Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar asserts India will pursue its national interest without external pressure, emphasizing the balance between tradition and progress
22-12-2024External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized that India would always act in its national interest and for the global good, without being pressured to conform to external expectations. In a video message during a function in Mumbai, he made it clear that India would never allow others to impose a veto on its decisions.
Jaishankar distinguished independence from neutrality, stating that India would always pursue what is right for its national interest and the global community. He added that India had been taught for too long to view progress and modernity as a rejection of its heritage and traditions.
The Minister stressed the importance of balancing technology and tradition, particularly in an era of globalization, and stated that as India became more prominent on the global stage, the impact would be profound. He asserted that India’s progress must be rooted in its core values, including its cultural heritage. "Bharat must progress without losing its Bharatiyata (Indianness)," he stated, highlighting that only then could India emerge as a leading power in a multipolar world.
Jaishankar’s remarks were made during his address at the 27th SIES Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati National Eminence Award ceremony, where he was conferred the award for his contributions to public leadership. The award is named after the late 68th seer of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi, and recognizes achievements in various fields, including leadership, science, technology, and spiritualism.
The External Affairs Minister highlighted India's unique status as a civilization state and its ability to influence the global arena by leveraging its cultural strengths. He emphasized the importance of the younger generation being aware of and valuing the nation’s heritage, and how this awareness must resonate at the societal level.
Jaishankar also discussed India's recent achievements, noting that the country had demonstrated the capabilities and commitment to tackle key issues like poverty, discrimination, and lack of opportunities. On the global stage, India had positioned itself as an independent power, committed to global well-being, particularly for the Global South.
Despite these advancements, Jaishankar acknowledged the challenges that India still faces, such as pessimistic views and ideologies that undermine the country. However, he remained optimistic, stating that India was rediscovering itself, with a more authentic voice emerging as democracy deepened.
