The Indian Air Force (IAF) has formally surrendered possession of a 39.5-acre property housing its sports complex at Race Course Air Force Station in New Delhi, transferring the land to the Land and Development Office (L&DO) under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
The property, situated close to the Prime Minister's official residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, is among the prominent government land parcels being reclaimed by the Centre as part of a wider review of land utilisation in the national capital's most strategically located areas.
The transfer has been carried out on an "as is where is" basis, meaning the property has been handed over in its existing condition without requiring alterations to its physical infrastructure.
Officials from the Defence Estate Office, the Indian Air Force and the L&DO are expected to undertake a joint survey to verify the precise boundaries and area of the property.
The exercise will also identify any discrepancies between official land records and actual measurements.
Air Force Sports Complex Shut Before Formal Handover
The transfer follows the closure of the Air Force Sports Complex, which had long served as a recreational facility for defence personnel.
Spread across nearly 40 acres, the complex included a golf course, swimming pool, badminton courts and several other sporting amenities.
The facility was closed ahead of the formal handover after the L&DO issued notices directing its management to vacate the premises and return possession of the land.
The closure also reportedly affected a longstanding ceremonial tradition associated with senior Air Force officers.
Former IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, who retired on October 31, was unable to participate in the customary farewell golfing event, commonly referred to as a "golfing-out" ceremony, at the facility.
The development highlighted the immediate consequences of the government's decision to recover the property.
Centre Expands Land Reclamation Exercise Around PM's Residence
The recovery of the Air Force property forms part of a larger initiative involving valuable government-owned land in and around Lok Kalyan Marg.
The area contains several prominent institutional, recreational and defence-linked establishments occupying extensive stretches of land in central New Delhi.
The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has been examining the occupation and utilisation of these properties, with the L&DO overseeing the process of recovering land under its administrative jurisdiction.
The government had previously directed the authorities concerned to surrender the land occupied by the Air Force Golf Course.
With the latest handover completed, another substantial property has returned to the direct control of the central government's land administration.
Delhi Race Club And Jaipur Polo Ground Also Reclaimed
The Air Force Sports Complex is not the only prominent property affected by the Centre's land recovery exercise.
In August, the L&DO recovered possession of approximately 53 acres occupied by the Delhi Race Club along Lok Kalyan Marg.
The government cited the requirement of the land for a public purpose, although the precise nature of its proposed future utilisation was not disclosed.
Another significant property brought under the exercise was the Jaipur Polo Ground, previously used by the India Polo Association.
The Centre justified the recovery of that land by referring to public requirements, administrative considerations and defence-related infrastructure needs.
Together, these developments indicate a broader effort to reassess the allocation of extensive government land parcels to sporting and recreational institutions in one of Delhi's most valuable locations.
Future Use Of Reclaimed Land Remains Unclear
The latest transfer places the 39.5-acre Air Force property under the administrative control of the L&DO, but the government has not publicly specified how the site will ultimately be utilised.
The forthcoming joint survey is expected to provide clarity on the exact area being transferred and ensure that official records accurately reflect the property's dimensions.
The recovery of multiple large properties around Lok Kalyan Marg has also drawn attention to the Centre's evolving approach towards the management of government-owned land in central Delhi.
With the Air Force Sports Complex, Delhi Race Club premises and Jaipur Polo Ground all forming part of the exercise, a considerable amount of strategically located land has been brought back under direct government control.
The next significant development will be the Centre's decision on the future use of these properties and whether additional government land parcels in the vicinity will be brought under similar review.
