Deposed Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued her first statement since fleeing the country, condemning the coup that ousted her government as a grave insult to her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding President of Bangladesh, and the many martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation's independence.
In a statement relayed by her son, Sajeeb Wazed, Hasina expressed her deep dismay: "The Father of the Nation, under whose leadership we achieved independence and gained self-esteem, has been grossly insulted. The blood of millions of martyrs has been dishonored. I seek justice from the people of Bangladesh."
She also called on citizens to observe National Mourning Day on August 15, commemorating the anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's assassination. "I urge you to observe the day with dignity and solemnity. Please offer prayers and lay floral tributes at Bangabandhu Bhavan," she stated.
Hasina voiced her concern over the ongoing violence and loss of life in Bangladesh, offering her condolences to those affected by the unrest. "Students, teachers, policemen, journalists, cultural workers, and innocent bystanders have lost their lives due to terrorism and violence. My heart goes out to those enduring the pain of losing loved ones, as I am," she said.
The former Prime Minister demanded strict action against those responsible for the violence and vandalism in the country. "I call for a thorough investigation to identify and punish the perpetrators behind these heinous acts," she added.
Sheikh Hasina's 15-year tenure as Prime Minister ended abruptly on August 5, following her resignation amid escalating protests against her government. She is currently believed to be in a secure location in India.
