IPL 2025 Retentions: Major Releases and Surprising Picks

As IPL franchises finalize their retentions for the 2025 season, star players like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Shreyas Iyer are released, while veterans Dhoni and Rohit stay put

The 10 IPL franchises have announced their player retentions for the upcoming 2025 season, with notable releases and surprise picks ahead of the auctions. In a surprising move, players like Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul have been let go by their respective teams. Meanwhile, iconic players MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma remain with their long-time franchises, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI), respectively.

CSK utilized the 'uncapped player' rule to keep Dhoni and also retained Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, and Shivam Dube for significant sums. MI made Jasprit Bumrah their top pick, followed by Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rohit Sharma.

KKR retained core players including Rinku Singh, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell. Rinku was their top selection, while other valuable picks included Varun Chakaravarthy, Harshit Rana, and Ramandeep Singh.

SRH opted to retain Heinrich Klaasen for a massive amount, alongside Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

RCB kept star player Virat Kohli, while Rajat Patidar and Yash Dayal were brought back. LSG released KL Rahul but held onto Nicholas Pooran, Ravi Bishnoi, Mayank Yadav, and Ayush Badoni.

PBKS chose to retain uncapped players Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh. Rajasthan Royals maintained their Indian core with Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Riyan Parag, and brought in Shimron Hetmyer.

GT retained Rashid Khan, making him their primary pick, with Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan following. Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia were also retained.

Finally, DC made a bold choice by releasing Rishabh Pant and prioritizing Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, and Abhishek Porel.
