Tensions in the Gulf region intensified after Iran launched missile strikes that hit multiple locations in the United Arab Emirates, triggering explosions, infrastructure damage and strong condemnation from regional leaders.

The attacks came in response to joint military operations by the United States and Israel, which reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Following the incident, Iran carried out retaliatory strikes targeting several Gulf locations.

Reacting strongly to the developments, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan criticised Tehran’s actions and urged the country to behave responsibly. His diplomatic adviser, Anwar Gargash, said Iran’s decision to attack Gulf states was a strategic mistake that risked further isolating the country.

According to Gargash, Iran’s confrontation should not extend to neighbouring states that are not directly involved in the conflict. He warned that continued aggression could deepen regional instability and push Iran into greater diplomatic isolation.

Missiles reportedly struck the Al-Dhafra Air Base in Abu Dhabi, a facility used by the United States military. Several other areas in the emirate were also shaken by blasts during the strikes.

Later, explosions were reported in Dubai, one of the region’s most important commercial and financial centres. Authorities temporarily closed the city’s airspace, causing disruption to flights across the Gulf.

The attacks triggered five major blasts across Dubai, damaging parts of Dubai International Airport and affecting aviation operations. At least four people were reported injured.

Some of the city’s iconic landmarks were also impacted. The luxury hotel Burj Al Arab suffered significant damage during the strikes. Meanwhile, a fire was reported near another hotel on Palm Jumeirah, the man-made island known for its resorts and residential complexes.

The escalation was not limited to the UAE. Explosions were also heard in Doha and other parts of the Gulf on Sunday. Oman was reportedly hit for the first time as Iran expanded its retaliatory actions beyond its immediate adversaries.

Regional leaders warned that the attacks risk widening the conflict and destabilising the Gulf, while diplomatic voices in the UAE said Tehran must reconsider its course before tensions spiral further.
