13-07-2026A conservative Iranian newspaper has stirred fresh controversy by publishing an online graphic featuring several prominent international leaders following renewed calls for retaliation over the death of Iran's former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The publication came days after Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father as Iran's Supreme Leader, delivered his first public message since the funeral ceremonies. In his statement, he vowed that those responsible for his father's death would face consequences, describing revenge as an unavoidable national objective.
Although Mojtaba Khamenei said Iran had identified individuals it considered responsible, he did not disclose any names or provide further details.
Shortly afterward, the Tehran-based Hamshahri newspaper shared an infographic on its digital platforms displaying photographs of 13 foreign political leaders alongside excerpts from the Supreme Leader's remarks. There has been no official confirmation from Iranian authorities that the list reflects the government's position.
Among those featured in the graphic were US President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. It also included US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
The graphic appeared online but was not included in the newspaper's printed edition.
Relations between Iran and several Western nations have remained strained following the conflict that began earlier this year. During the hostilities, Tehran accused a number of European governments of failing to condemn military strikes on Iranian territory and alleged that some had facilitated US military operations by allowing the use of their airspace.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed during the opening phase of the conflict on February 28. Reports have also suggested that Mojtaba Khamenei sustained injuries during the same series of attacks, although he has not made a public appearance since before the war.
