Israel launched a series of airstrikes targeting Iranian military sites early Saturday, following an Iranian missile strike earlier this month. Iran confirmed that two of its soldiers were killed in the Israeli attacks.
Israeli forces conducted three waves of strikes across Tehran and nearby regions, reportedly hitting "military objectives" with precision. Following the strikes, Israeli officials announced the completion of "Operation Days of Repentance," claiming the mission had met its goals. An Iranian source, however, warned of a "proportional response" to what it described as Israeli "aggression."
The Israeli military's statement detailed that the airstrikes targeted "military installations" in response to "months of continued attacks from Iran against Israel." A military spokesperson noted that any additional escalations from Iran would lead to further action from Israel.
The Iranian military confirmed two casualties, stating that soldiers had died defending the nation’s security and countering what they termed as "attacks by the Zionist regime." According to Israeli media, the operation involved over 100 fighter jets and targeted over 20 locations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant were at military headquarters overseeing the operation.
Initial fears that Israel might target Iranian nuclear or energy infrastructure were dispelled, as reports clarified that the strikes focused on military bases located in the west and southwest of Tehran. Iran’s air defense reportedly intercepted some projectiles, but minor damage was still reported at certain sites. Iran has since grounded all flights and warned of impending retaliation, while Israel closed its airspace to civilian aircraft.
The United States, informed of the planned operation in advance, stated it was not involved in the strikes. A senior White House official characterized Israel's actions as "self-defense," and President Joe Biden has been briefed on the evolving situation.
In addition to targets within Iran, Israeli forces also launched attacks on military sites in Iraq and Syria. Explosions were reported in several Iraqi cities, including Tikrit, Baiji, and Samarra, as well as in multiple Syrian locations.
The strikes come after Iran’s missile attack on October 1, in which approximately 180 ballistic missiles were launched at Israeli targets. Israeli forces have indicated that Saturday’s strikes were focused on disrupting Iran’s missile production capabilities.
