Israel Removes Inaccurate Map of India from Official Website After Backlash
Israel removed a map depicting Jammu and Kashmir incorrectly on its official website following social media backlash, calling it a website editor's mistake
04-10-2024Israel has removed a controversial map of India from its official website after facing backlash for inaccurately depicting a portion of Jammu and Kashmir as part of Pakistan. Reuven Azar, Israel's ambassador to India, acknowledged the error and clarified that it was a mistake made by the website editor.
The issue gained attention after a user on X (formerly Twitter) pointed out the incorrect map. The user wrote, "India stands with Israel. But does Israel stand with India? Note the map of India (pay attention to Jammu and Kashmir) on Israel's official website."
In response, Ambassador Azar quickly addressed the concern, stating, "Website editor's mistake. Thank you for noticing. Was taken down."
India has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inalienable part of its territory.
This incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, where Israel is engaged in a multi-front conflict. The situation intensified after the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, leading Israel to shift its military focus from Gaza to Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah positions. The conflict further escalated when Iran launched 200 missiles at Israel, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to warn of potential retaliation.
Recently, during his address at the United Nations General Assembly, Netanyahu displayed two maps labeling countries as either "The Curse" or "The Blessing." Countries like Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen were marked as "The Curse," while nations such as India, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia were labeled as "The Blessing." Interestingly, these maps also showed Palestinian territories and the Golan Heights as part of Israel, further raising concerns.
