Israel Targets Hezbollah in Beirut Airstrikes, Escalating Regional Conflict
Israeli airstrikes hit Beirut, aiming at Hezbollah’s leadership, while the group’s leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah reportedly escapes unharmed
28-09-2024Massive plumes of smoke filled the skies over Beirut on Friday as Israel conducted airstrikes targeting the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. These strikes were reportedly aimed at the group’s central headquarters, allegedly in an attempt to eliminate its leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah. However, hours after the attack, a spokesperson for Hezbollah confirmed that Nasrallah was unharmed and not present at the targeted site.
The Israeli airstrikes hit the densely populated southern suburbs of Beirut, particularly the Dahiyeh area, known as a Hezbollah stronghold. Multiple buildings were reportedly destroyed, causing significant damage and creating large craters in the ground. The Lebanese health ministry reported at least nine fatalities and over 90 injuries as search and rescue operations continued throughout the night.
While Israeli military officials confirmed that the strikes targeted senior Hezbollah commanders, unverified reports suggested that Nasrallah was at the headquarters during the assault but was later unreachable. The airstrikes marked a significant escalation in hostilities that have persisted for nearly a year and coincide with ongoing diplomatic efforts by the US and France to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
Before the airstrikes, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the United Nations General Assembly, stating that Israel had “tolerated this intolerable situation for nearly a year.” He emphasized Israel's right to defend its citizens against threats posed by Hezbollah, asserting that military actions were necessary to dismantle the group's capabilities.
Following the strikes, the Israeli military urged residents of neighborhoods known to harbor Hezbollah assets to evacuate. The IDF reiterated its commitment to dismantling Hezbollah’s military infrastructure, which it claims endangers civilian lives in Lebanon.
The roots of the ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel are deeply entrenched in geopolitical and territorial tensions, exacerbated over the past year due to extensive Israeli military operations in Gaza. This latest surge in violence has already claimed over 500 lives, including many women and children, with Hezbollah responding to Israeli airstrikes by launching retaliatory rocket fire at Israeli targets.
Tensions escalated earlier this month after a covert operation resulted in the detonation of thousands of modified pagers and walkie-talkies, killing at least 37 people in Lebanon. Hezbollah labeled this incident as the “biggest security breach” the group had faced. In response, the Israeli military has intensified its operations along the Lebanon-Israel border, significantly outpacing Hezbollah’s retaliatory actions.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, hopes for a temporary ceasefire appear to be dwindling following the latest airstrikes. Additionally, Israel has bolstered its military presence along its northern border, preparing for a potential ground invasion to further dismantle Hezbollah's infrastructure and capabilities.
