A report from the NGO "Call for Justice" has raised serious concerns about alleged religious discrimination at Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI). The fact-finding report, led by respected legal and administrative professionals, accuses the university of biased treatment towards non-Muslim students, faculty, and staff, and cites instances of coercion for religious conversion.

The report describes several accounts where non-Muslims reportedly faced discriminatory behavior. In one case, an Assistant Professor was allegedly taunted by colleagues due to religious differences. Another incident involved a non-Muslim Scheduled Caste faculty member reportedly being denied basic facilities like office furniture, which were readily provided to Muslim counterparts.

There are also reports of harassment against tribal students and staff, with some feeling forced to leave the university due to what they described as a hostile environment. In one instance of alleged coercion, a professor reportedly told students their degree completion depended on converting to Islam, claiming she had experienced personal benefits after converting.

Jamia Millia Islamia’s Official Response

JMI has issued a statement in response, emphasizing its commitment to inclusivity and condemning any form of discrimination. The university acknowledged that previous administrations may have mishandled certain incidents, but affirmed that under Vice-Chancellor Professor Mazhar Asif, efforts are focused on creating an equitable environment.

The administration highlighted recent steps to promote diversity, including appointing non-Muslim Scheduled Caste individuals to key administrative positions. Prof. Asif reiterated his "zero-tolerance policy" toward discrimination based on caste, gender, or religion.

Regarding the claims of coerced religious conversion, the university categorically denied having any substantiating evidence. It called on individuals with concrete proof to come forward, pledging to take strict action if necessary. "We are committed to ensuring a safe and inclusive campus and take all grievances seriously," the university told India Today TV.

This report has cast a spotlight on Jamia Millia Islamia, raising questions about inclusivity and equal treatment at one of India’s prominent universities.
