Jammu and Kashmir’s Cabinet has passed a resolution, approved by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, urging the Centre to restore the Union Territory's statehood
19-10-2024Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has approved a resolution put forth by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s cabinet, urging the central government to restore the Union Territory’s statehood. The resolution emphasizes returning Jammu and Kashmir to its "original form" as a state, marking a significant push toward reviving the identity of the former state.
The Cabinet has granted Omar Abdullah the authority to personally discuss the matter with the Prime Minister and other central government officials. A government spokesperson confirmed, "The Chief Minister will soon travel to New Delhi to engage with the Prime Minister and Union Ministers about the statehood restoration."
In addition to this resolution, the Cabinet announced the date for the first session of the newly formed Legislative Assembly, which is scheduled for November 4 in Srinagar. The Lieutenant Governor is expected to deliver an address at the start of the session.
The Cabinet has also recommended Mubarak Gul as the Protem Speaker, tasked with administering the oath to the newly elected members of the Assembly on October 21. Lt Governor Sinha has already signed the order confirming Gul's appointment until a permanent Speaker is selected.
The draft for the Lt Governor's address to the Assembly was also presented to the council of ministers for review, with plans for further discussions before final approval.
Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir after its reformation as a Union Territory. Abdullah previously served as Chief Minister of the state from 2009 to 2015.
The recent September-October Assembly elections, the first in ten years, saw the National Conference-Congress alliance secure 48 out of 90 seats. The National Conference emerged as the dominant party, winning 42 seats, while the Congress won six.
