US Vice President JD Vance left for Pakistan on Friday at the helm of a senior American delegation tasked with advancing peace discussions with Iran. Ahead of his departure, Vance expressed cautious confidence, saying he expects constructive dialogue but warned that the US would not respond kindly to bad-faith tactics.

He emphasised that Washington remains open to meaningful engagement if Tehran approaches the table sincerely. However, he made clear that any attempt to manipulate the process would be firmly resisted. According to Vance, President Donald Trump has laid out clear parameters for the talks, and the delegation will proceed accordingly.

The Islamabad meetings are being closely watched as one of the most consequential diplomatic interactions between Washington and Tehran in decades. Direct engagement between the two nations has been rare since 1979, aside from limited breakthroughs such as former President Barack Obama’s 2013 phone call with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

The American team includes prominent figures such as Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, underlining the significance the White House places on the negotiations. Officials have remained tight-lipped about whether the talks will occur face-to-face or through intermediaries.

Despite a recently announced temporary truce, friction continues. Tehran has argued that any understanding must include halting Israeli military operations in Lebanon, a claim rejected by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump. Meanwhile, Washington has urged Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, criticising what it described as inadequate compliance.

White House representatives, including spokesperson Anna Kelly, have projected confidence, stating that the administration seeks an agreement that prioritises American interests.

For Vance, the mission marks a pivotal diplomatic test. Though relatively new to high-level foreign policy negotiations, he has taken on a prominent role in shaping the administration’s approach. Observers note that vice presidents rarely lead ceasefire talks involving active US military engagement, making this assignment particularly unusual.

With tensions simmering and expectations high, the Islamabad negotiations could significantly influence both the fragile ceasefire and broader Middle East stability.
