On Monday, JP Nadda, the national president of the BJP and a Union Minister, was named the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha. Earlier this month, Nadda also took on the role of Union Health Minister and was given charge of the Chemicals and Fertilisers Ministry.

Nadda will be succeeding Piyush Goyal as the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha.

Following his swearing-in as Union Minister, it was speculated that Nadda might resign from his position as BJP's national president, a role he has held since 2020, succeeding the current Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

However, it appears that Nadda will continue in his role as BJP chief.

According to party regulations, a national president is elected only after organizational elections are completed in at least 50 percent of all states, a process expected to take around six months.

Who is JP Nadda?

JP Nadda's political journey began in 1975 when he emerged as an activist during the Bihar Movement, also known as the JP Movement. He then joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), contested the student Central Association elections at Patna University, and became its secretary in 1977.

Nadda was actively engaged in student politics between 1977 and 1979 in Ranchi.

In 2012, he was first elected to the Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh. In 2014, when Amit Shah became the BJP chief, Nadda was appointed to the BJP's parliamentary board.

Before his national-level roles, Nadda served as an MLA in Himachal Pradesh's Bilaspur assembly constituency three times, from 1993 to 2007.
