The junior doctors protesting the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case have agreed to meet with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat residence at 5 pm today. After rejecting previous invites, the doctors accepted this "fifth and final" invitation following an agreement that both parties could record the minutes of the meeting.
The state government had earlier denied the doctors' demand for live-streaming the meeting but has now agreed to share the meeting's minutes with the doctors. This marks a key step forward in the month-long standoff that began after the gruesome rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant sent the latest invite, requesting the same delegation of doctors that met with the Chief Minister on September 14 to attend today's meeting. The doctors had previously held talks with Mamata Banerjee, but the meeting failed to yield results due to disagreements over live-streaming.
The protests have seen widespread support from the medical community, with the demand for justice and increased transparency at the heart of the issue. While the government continues to resist live-streaming, today's meeting represents a potential breakthrough in resolving the impasse.
