K Kavitha, who has been detained since March over alleged corruption and money laundering related to the Delhi liquor policy case, was released from jail on Tuesday evening following a Supreme Court ruling granting her conditional bail. The release came just hours after the court decided that Kavitha's continued custody was no longer necessary, as both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had completed their investigations into her case.
As Kavitha exited the prison, supporters from her party, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), celebrated with drums and fireworks. Her brother and BRS working president, KT Rama Rao, was also present to welcome her.
In her first remarks after leaving jail, Kavitha expressed defiance, stating, "We are fighters, we will fight it out legally and politically. They have only made the BRS and KCR's team unbreakable."
The Supreme Court's decision came in response to her appeal against a July 1 ruling by the Delhi High Court, which had denied her bail. The bench instructed that she be released upon providing bail bonds of ₹10 lakh for each case.
The court also criticized the fairness of the investigations conducted by the central agencies, questioning their approach and expressing concern over the selective nature of their actions. Senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi, representing Kavitha, highlighted that the investigations were complete and the charge sheets had been filed. He also referenced a previous Supreme Court decision granting bail to co-accused Manish Sisodia.
Kavitha was initially arrested by the ED at her residence in Hyderabad on March 15, and subsequently by the CBI from Tihar Jail on April 11.
