With the results of the Delhi elections just a day away, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal has accused the BJP of attempting to lure his party's candidates with lucrative offers to switch sides. The BJP, however, has dismissed the allegations as "frustration" on AAP’s part and has warned of legal consequences if the claims are not withdrawn.
Mr. Kejriwal, who is eyeing another term as Chief Minister if his party secures victory, alleged that 16 AAP candidates were contacted and offered ₹15 crore each to leave the party.
"In the last two hours, 16 of our candidates have received calls with an offer to defect in exchange for ₹15 crore and a ministerial position," he stated in an online post, questioning why the BJP would need to resort to such tactics if they were confident of a majority.
The AAP chief further claimed that exit polls predicting a BJP victory with over 55 seats were part of a strategy to pressure candidates. "These fabricated surveys are meant to create psychological pressure, but not a single one of our members will yield," he asserted.
AAP candidate Mukesh Ahlawat, contesting from Sultanpur Majra, also supported Kejriwal’s allegations. Sharing his experience, he claimed, "I received a call offering me ₹15 crore and a ministerial post if I defect. But the trust and respect given to me by Mr. Kejriwal and AAP mean more than any offer. I will never betray my party."
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi reposted Ahlawat’s statement, alleging that the exit polls were being used as a tool to destabilize AAP legislators.
Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh also weighed in, stating, "This attempt to buy our candidates proves that the BJP has already conceded defeat, even before the results are announced."
The BJP, however, has outrightly rejected these allegations. Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva termed AAP’s claims as an expression of their anxiety ahead of the results. "These are baseless accusations. If Sanjay Singh does not retract his statement and issue an apology, legal action will follow," he warned, reminding AAP that Mr. Kejriwal is already facing a defamation case.
Delhi voted on February 5, and the counting of votes is set for tomorrow. While multiple exit polls have predicted a strong performance by the BJP, past trends suggest that such projections are not always accurate.
