Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has found himself at the center of yet another controversy after allegedly referring to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as a "traitor" during a recent performance.
Mumbai Police registered an FIR against Kamra on Monday following a complaint by Rahul Kanal, a leader from Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction. The complaint, filed at Khar Police Station, accused the comedian of making defamatory remarks against Shinde, which party members deemed offensive.
According to officials, Kamra has been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 353(1)(b) for statements leading to public mischief and 356(2) for defamation. The case was officially registered at the MIDC police station.
During his performance at the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai, Kamra discussed the ongoing political shifts in Maharashtra. In a satirical take, he commented, “Shiv Sena split from BJP, then Shiv Sena split from Shiv Sena. NCP also broke apart, leaving voters confused." He also performed a parody song, loosely based on the Bollywood film Dil To Pagal Hai, with lyrics implying that from his perspective, Shinde appeared to be a "traitor."
Although Kamra did not directly name Shinde, many interpreted his remarks as an attack on the Deputy Chief Minister, sparking backlash.
Following the uproar, members of the Shiv Sena faction allegedly vandalized the venue where Kamra’s performance took place.
Reacting to the incident, Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray condemned the attack on the comedy venue, calling it an act of cowardice. Taking to social media, he wrote, “Mindhe’s coward gang destroys a comedy stage just because comedian @kunalkamra88 sang a song about Eknath Mindhe. Only an insecure coward would react to a joke like this.”
