An emotional night unfolded in Buenos Aires as Lionel Messi played what is expected to be his last international match in Argentina before heading to another World Cup. The reigning champions cruised to a 5-0 victory over Zambia at La Bombonera, but it was the post-match scenes that captured hearts.

As the national anthem echoed and fans filled the stadium with chants, Messi appeared visibly moved, wiping away tears while standing alongside his teammates. The 38-year-old forward later acknowledged the emotional weight of bidding farewell to home supporters ahead of the global tournament.

Back in the starting XI after being rested in the previous outing against Mauritania, Messi wasted little time influencing the game. Inside four minutes, he controlled a high pass near the box and slipped a precise through ball to Julián Álvarez, who opened the scoring.

Just before the break, Messi added his own name to the scoresheet, combining neatly with Alexis Mac Allister in a swift exchange before finishing calmly to register his 116th international goal — and the 902nd strike of his professional career.

Argentina extended their advantage in the second half. After a foul on Thiago Almada led to a penalty, Messi chose not to take the spot-kick, instead handing the ball to veteran defender Nicolás Otamendi, who converted confidently. An own goal by Dominic Chanda and a late effort from Valentín Barco completed the emphatic win.

Coached by Lionel Scaloni, Argentina now turn their focus to defending their World Cup title. They are set to face Algeria, Austria and Jordan in Group J of the tournament in June, with additional friendlies lined up, including one against Serbia.

Messi is widely expected to captain the side at what would be his sixth World Cup — a record appearance — as Argentina aim to secure consecutive titles on football’s biggest stage.
