The Agnipath scheme, which has faced significant criticism from the Opposition, was the center of a contentious debate in the Lok Sabha today between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Union Minister Rajnath Singh. The debate highlighted sharp disagreements over the scheme's implications for soldiers and their families.
During a speech on the Union Budget, Rahul Gandhi criticized the Agnipath scheme, arguing that it undermines the financial security and respect of soldiers and their families due to the absence of pension benefits. He described the scheme as indicative of the government's "anti-youth and anti-farmer" stance.
In response, Rajnath Singh accused Gandhi of spreading misinformation about the Budget and the Agnipath scheme. Singh offered to address the concerns in detail during a future discussion, insisting that Gandhi's statements were misleading. He emphasized that the families of Agniveers who die in service receive a financial assistance of ₹1 crore, contrary to Gandhi's claims.
Gandhi had previously highlighted the case of Agniveer Ajay Kumar, who died in the line of duty, asserting that Kumar's family had not received compensation. Kumar's family later clarified that they had indeed received some compensation but were still advocating for pension benefits and recognition.
The Agnipath scheme, introduced in 2022, aims to recruit personnel for short-term service in the armed forces, with the goal of modernizing the age profile of military candidates. However, the scheme has been criticized for not providing traditional benefits like pensions to the families of Agniveers in the event of their death.
The controversy surrounding the scheme has led to broader discussions, including a parliamentary panel's recommendation that families of Agniveers who die in the line of duty should receive benefits comparable to those of regular military personnel.
