The Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering, commenced on Monday in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, as massive crowds gathered to take the holy dip at the Triveni Sangam during the first 'Shahi Snan' on the occasion of Paush Purnima.

Devotees thronged the ghats of Prayagraj to bathe at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers, seeking to wash away their sins and attain salvation (moksha). By 8 a.m. on the first day, government data estimated that 40 lakh people had already performed the sacred ritual.

A Historic Gathering

This year’s Maha Kumbh, held after 144 years, is expected to attract over 45 crore devotees, including 15 lakh foreign visitors, during its 45-day duration. Pilgrims from across India and the globe are arriving in Prayagraj to participate in this grand spiritual celebration.

Welcoming the attendees, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sentiments on social media, saying, “The Maha Kumbh embodies India’s timeless spiritual heritage and celebrates faith, devotion, and harmony. Wishing all pilgrims and tourists a wonderful stay.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended his greetings, emphasizing the cultural and spiritual significance of the event. He expressed hope that the Maha Kumbh would fulfill devotees’ wishes and showcase the pride of Sanatan Dharma.

Preparations on a Grand Scale

The state administration, led by Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, has implemented extensive preparations for the mega event. With a budget of ₹7,000 crore, efforts focus on sanitation, security, and integrating modern technology. Singh highlighted that this year’s arrangements surpass those of the 2019 Kumbh, which saw 24 crore pilgrims.

Tech Meets Spirituality

For the first time, advanced technology is playing a significant role in ensuring the safety and comfort of devotees. The Uttar Pradesh Police have deployed underwater drones for 24/7 monitoring of activities beneath the water’s surface. AI-enabled cameras, flagged boats with life-saving equipment, and teams from the PAC, NDRF, and SDRF are stationed to provide a safe environment for pilgrims.

Cultural Extravaganza

The Maha Kumbh 2025 is also celebrating Indian art and heritage. A cultural space called 'Kalagram,' organized by the Ministry of Culture, has been set up to showcase the country’s diverse traditions.

Prominent artists such as Shankar Mahadevan, Kailash Kher, Mohit Chauhan, Hans Raj Hans, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Hariharan, and Maithili Thakur are scheduled to perform, adding a vibrant dimension to the spiritual event.

A Confluence of Faith and Harmony

As the Maha Kumbh unfolds, Prayagraj is buzzing with activity as millions of devotees come together to experience the spiritual and cultural richness of this historic event, blending tradition with modernity in unprecedented ways.
